Morris Davis will enter his fourth season at the helm of the Seahawks in 2007. After a tough 6-19 start to his SMCM coaching career, Davis has guided St. Mary's to back-to-back winning seasons and owns a 45-48 career mark. Winning has always been part of the tradition of every program that he has involved himself with, and he has certainly brought that here to St. Mary's. Since Davis' arrival, the Seahawks have improved their overall winning percentage and conference finish, demonstrating that St. Mary's has become a better team every year under his leadership.
In 2006, he led the Seahawks to a record of 19-10 (.665), which is the highest winning percentage since 1992 when St. Mary's finished the year, 25-6 (.806). For the second year in a row, Davis coached the CAC Rookie-of-the-Year in Katie Ewing.
Davis concluded the 2005 season leading the Seahawks to their first 20-win season since 1999 and their first winning season since 2002, while Rebecca Tursell was voted as the 2005 CAC Rookie-of-the-Year. Tursell became the first-ever Seahawk selected as rookie-of-the-year.
His mindset of winning comes from being involved with volleyball for over 25 years both as a player and coach, including 15 years as the head coach for the All-Navy and US Armed Forces women's volleyball teams.
During the 1999 and 2000 seasons, Davis served as the head varsity coach at McDonough High School in Pomfret, Maryland, where he led the school to a two-year record of 39-3 and a No. 2 ranking. The team finished as regional runners-up twice during his tenure. He also has coaching experience at the club level.
Davis does have one year of collegiate coaching experience to his credit prior to St. Mary's, leading Norfolk State University to a second place conference tournament finish with a 10-9 mark during the 1987 season.
Born on the island of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, Davis is a 20-year veteran of the US Navy. He earned a B.S. in technical operations management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2001.
